Kupwara (J&K): The Indian Army’s ‘Azmat-e-Hind’ initiative at the Line of Control (LoC) in the Teetwal area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district is breathing new life into border tourism. Once associated with cross-border tensions, Teetwal is now emerging as a symbol of peace, patriotism, and potential, Army officials said on Tuesday.

‘Azmat-e-Hind’, meaning “Pride of India”, centres around a majestic 104-foot-high national flag installed near the LoC. Inaugurated in November 2023, the initiative celebrates the bravery of the armed forces, the strength of local communities, and the scenic beauty of India’s border areas.

Brigadier SK Pradhan, Commander of the Shakti Vijay Brigade, explained the vision behind the initiative: “Azmat-e-Hind was created to draw tourists to these remote border regions, allowing them to witness not just the landscape but also the spirit of cooperation between the Army and the local population.”

The initiative has spurred the development of homestays, with many locals opening their homes to visitors. These homestay owners have been trained by the army to provide a welcoming and comfortable experience for tourists. “We want every visitor to return with stories of warmth and hospitality—and bring ten more along next time,” Brigadier Pradhan added.

According to the Army’s statement, its efforts go beyond security, also including vital infrastructure and logistical support. This transformation has turned Teetwal into a tourist-friendly zone and strengthened the connection between soldiers and civilians.

One of the most moving experiences for visitors is participating in the daily hoisting of the 104-foot national flag, where patriotic energy fills the air and tourists stand beside soldiers in salute to the tricolour.

The Army also organises interactive sessions with tourists and students, offering a chance to hear firsthand accounts of courage and service. This educational aspect has had a lasting impact, especially on young locals.

Sunder Shamin, a student at Army Goodwill High School, expressed pride in the transformation. “This flag represents India’s unity and pays tribute to the heroes who gave their lives for our country during the wars with Pakistan,” he said. “This isn’t just a tourist spot—it’s a reminder of our bravery and history.”

Shamin also highlighted the region’s religious diversity and historical significance, pointing to landmarks like the Sharda Temple and a nearby gurudwara. “This place is a true symbol of unity in diversity,” he said. “I invite everyone to visit and learn about the sacrifices and history tied to this soil.”

The Azmat-e-Hind memorial has already hosted a range of cultural and educational events, including International Yoga Day celebrations and youth exchange programmes. With growing interest and positive response from visitors, the region is steadily positioning itself as a unique and meaningful destination on India’s tourism map.
