Colombo: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced England’s playing XI for the opening ODI against Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played on Wednesday, January 22, at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. The match marks the start of a three-game ODI series, with all fixtures set to be held at the same venue.
Harry Brook will continue to lead the England side, which also includes experienced campaigners Joe Root, wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, and leg-spinner Adil Rashid. The squad blends senior players with all-round options as England look to begin the series on a strong note.
Ahead of the first ODI, Brook addressed an off-field incident from November, when he was involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington on the eve of an ODI against New Zealand. The episode resulted in a fine and a warning from the ECB.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Brook admitted his mistake and apologised for his actions. He said the incident was unprofessional and acknowledged that, as captain, he must set higher standards for the team. Brook also expressed regret towards his teammates and fans, emphasising that he had learned from the experience.
Following the ODI series, England and Sri Lanka will compete in a three-match T20I series, beginning January 30 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The T20Is will serve as part of both teams’ preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin next month.
England Playing XI (1st ODI vs Sri Lanka):
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Will Jacks, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid.
